Here at Herd HQ we know how fabulous our alpacas are. Not only for their wonderfully unique personalities, fleece and the gorgeous alpaca knitwear we can produce. We also know that they are very special in their ability to regenerate the land they live on. How cool is that?!
Alpacas are remarkable creatures that graze without uprooting plants. Unlike some other livestock, they nibble only the upper parts of grass, allowing immediate regeneration.
Alpacas have a small ecological footprint. Their selective grazing ensures that the grass continues to replenish itself, minimising the need for extensive field rotation. We are lucky enough to be able to ‘rest’ fields in the winter. The alpacas get very excited when they are allowed back in when the weather gets better in Spring!
Alpaca poop is rich in nutrients and doesn’t require composting thus creating an amazing natural fertiliser. This can be directly applied to fields, enhancing soil health, and promoting plant growth. It can also be made into a liquid spray on fertiliser for your indoor plants.
Alpacas coexist harmoniously with other farm animals and wildlife. We are lucky enough to be based in the beautiful New Forest. We are surrounded by all sorts of wildlife with the free roaming ponies, cattle, donkeys and pigs. There are also 5 different species of deer who can often be seen popping in for a munch on some of our good quality grass! The alpacas gentle impact allows native plants and insects to thrive, supporting overall biodiversity of this special area of the United Kingdom.
Here at Herd HQ we rotate three compost areas which we return to the land for various uses when ready. We chip the wood from fallen and felled trees to use as a base in the animal shelters. We make our own hay, select the best cuts for feeding and use the rest for bedding. Our six cats and one rabbit all benefit from a hay bed too!
We are very proud of our animals and the land they graze on. We believe in regeneration, recycling, traceability and love doing our bit to help keep the world and the fashion industry a more sustainable environment for all.
